OTOROHANGA NEWS

INTERESTING ITEMS. COUNTY ELECTIONS. (Our Resident Representative.) The results of the elections for riding members for Honikiwi and Waipa in the Otorohanga County, are:—W. I. Bowyer 42, Thomas Cumpstone 39, for Honikiwi; and V. W. Simms 78, W. Irvine 51, for Waipa. Mr Irvine had represented his riding for the past 10 years. Forty ratepayers failed to record their votes in Honikiwi riding, and 49 in Waipa. At the monthly meeting of the Town Board on Thursday evening, Mr F. 0. R. Phillips presiding, a general rate of lid in the £ was struck, which, with the special rates remaining as before, total 5i in the £. As a result of numerous complaints the Town Board will take action against drovers and others who do not keep to the stock routes, and property owners who have persistently disregarded previous notices to clear noxious weeds will also be prosecuted. At the meeting on Friday of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, it was decided to hold over the lectures by Mr Anso, on subjects of interest to the farming industry, until after the conference at Ottawa. A lecturer will be procured from W.E.A. to speak on economic problems during the winter school week The president and organiser of the Pig Marketing Association will be invited to visit the district. The matter of a stock drive for the benefit of the unemployed was fully discussed and it was arranged that the stock would be collected here on the 31st inst., and railed to the Auckland freezing works for distribution to the various organisations that distribute relief to the needy. Last winter’s arrangements for the collection of clothes, farm produce, and foodstuffs, will be continued from now to the end of winter and same forwarded for the relief of distress in Auckland. About seventy farmers of the Waitomo, Te Raumauku, Pirongia Road, Whawharua, Rewa, and Otorohanga districts attended a special meeting here yesterday to consider the formation of a Rabbit Board to serve these localities. Mr H. Rothery presided. The formation of such a board was strongly opposed, it being contended that each farmer should keep his own property clear of rabbits, and that the cost of the functioning of a board was an added expense that coould not be afforded under present conditions. The meeting was a strenuous one and somewhat lively at times. It was finally decided, by 58 votes to 2, that “ this meeting is adverse to the formation of a Rabbit Board, and that an executive of seven be elected to represent the farmers present.” The executive set up to stop further attempts to form such a board were:— Messrs B. Symes (Pirongia Road), M. Cowley,*W. Buckett and H. C. Grierson (Honikiwi), H. Rothery (Whawharua), F. Hyde (Rewa), and B. Board (Hangatiki).
