TOWN BEAUTIFYING

TE AWAMUTU SOCIETY. ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual meeting of the Te Awaimutu Beautifying Society was held on Thursday evening, the president (Dr J. B. W. Roberton) occupying the chair. There was only a moderate attendance, the very wet weather debarring several keen members from being--present. The president, in his annual report, said that his remarks would follow largely the report of the supervisor. A good deal of Work has been done. The credit balance would be needed, as there would be no subsidy this year from the Unemployment Board. Practically all the plots taken in hand, were showing up well, notably at the triangle, which had been much improved. The “soldiers’ walk” along the ■bank of the Mangahoe stream was being steadily improved. It was pleasing, too, to record that the grass plots in Alexandra Street were being kept in order, several residents regularly using their lawn mowers on their ftrontages. He hoped that good work would be continued. He concluded with congratulations to the executive, especially Messrs M. H. Williams (supervisor) and D. Bockett (secretary and treasurer). The annual review by the honorary superintendent, Mr Montagu Williams, was as under:— , An inspection of the work by the society in various parts of the borough has recently been made, and it will be recognised that the maintenance and improvement of the plots have been thorough and consistent. At the railway station the grass has improved to a wonderful degree, having been cut and dressed, while the beds have always been tidy, and kept furnished. The trees on College Hill have been wonderful this autumn, most householders attending to thenown frontages, as far as grass is concerned, and the effect is good. Alexandra Street trees have been attended tq, and rough grass horse mown Several times. Newly planted trees in Mutu, Mangapiko and Young Streets were summer pruned and tied up. The Monument has never been so * attractive over so long a period, the late autu,mn favouring the Klondyke <: cosmos. They make a beautiful show just now. The pungas and native stuff at the Arawata Street bridge are quite established, and should winter better now. A further batch of trees were planted on the river walk, and will help to furnish up this area, on which the whole of our funds could be spent, and still not do justice to the possibilities of the scheme. The Cambridge Road triangle has been kept neat at all times during the past season. Hawkins’ corner has still to be improved, the barren nature of the grourid making progress slow. Roses in the prepared bed made a good spring showing, and most of the rockery stuff has become established. Thanks are due to Mr Bockett for some thousands of bulbs now planted in the open dug ground at the railway > station and foa* his attention to detail on our employed labour. During the year the activities of the society have been most beneficial to the unemployed of the town, most of the work having been carried out under scheme SA, and by R.S.A. men. The treasurer presented the statement of finances showing that the credit balance had been £7O Os lid at the beginning of the year and ended with £7l 7s sd. Members’ subscriptions were £3 2s 6d, and the floral fete provided £76 8s 3d. Other items brought the total to £152 18s Bd. Expenditure included £33 14s for labour on plots, £5 12s as purchase of pungas, and £l2 4s Id for plants, grass seed,, manure and cartages. Floral fete expenses were £23 17s 9d.
