WORK OF THE MONTH

IN WAIPA COUNTY.

ENGINEER'S REPORT,

The following report of work done since last meeting was presented by the engineer, Mr J. W. Civil, at Monday's meeting of the Waipa County Council:— RANGIAOHIA RIDING.

Great South Road, M.H. (HamiltonTe Awamutu).—l47 cyds of Te Kawa metal have been supplied and carted by our own trucks and spread, and grading carried out by motor grader. The section of bitumen road, 29 chains in length from the borough boundary, has been given a coat of cold emulsified bitumen, blinded with Te Kawa chips and rolled; also footpaths on this section of road and the Cambridge Road, a total distance of 30 i chains, have been treated in the same i way. ! Te Awamutu-Cambridge M.H.—274S I cyds of Te Kawa metal have been i supplied and carted by our own trucks and spread; also improvement carried out to bituminous sealed portion of this road by widening and sealing at < the bends. , _, mi , . I Hairini-Puahue Road: Fifty cubic yards of metal have been broken at Puahue quarry and carted by the Council's trucks and spread where most' needed. Chamberlain's Road grant, £BOO, £1 for £1: Specifications and proposals have been prepared and forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval; also a small amount of earthworks carried out in anticipation of same. Repairs and general surface work have been carried out on various other roads in the riding. ORAKAU RIDING. Great South Road M.H. Te Awamutu to County boundary: 201 cubic yards of Te Kawa metal have been supplied and carted by our trucks and spread; also 58 yards of Puniu river gravel from, dumps. 128 cubic yards of clay have been carted for backing up metal. Parawera Native school road grant: Plans and specifications have been prepared for forming 30 chains of 20 j foot road, including a large bridge , culvert and concrete culverts, and forwarded same and received back ap--1 proved of by Public Works Department; also authority received from Wellington. Tenders have been called for contract No. 235 for formation only, which are before this meeting to be dealt with. Concrete pipes and timber have been ordered, pipes already arrived and carted to sites. Monckton's Road, £4OO, £2 for £1: Plans and specifications for forming and culver ting this road to a width of 20ft, and one mile 72 chains m length, have been forwarded to and received back approved by P.W.D. and authority received from Wellington. Tenders are called for contract No. 236 for forming 85 chains of 20ft road, which are before this meeting to be dealt with. „„ „ Maunga Road grant, £9OO, £2 for £1: Specifications and proposals for preparing and metalling this road, 1 mile 58 chains in length, have been prepared and forwarded to the Pub-lic-Works Department for approval. Mangare Road grant, £2OO, £2 for £1: Before! placing proposals before the P.W.D. for gravelling portion of this road, I have written to the department to see if widening of road could not be carried out by some of the relief workers already working in the district. Some 100 cubic yards Of gravel sand have-*been carted from j Rae's pit by Council's truck that runs I out the relief workers to Owairaka, ! and some 25 chains of the long hill by Lowry's has been sanded. & Grading and general surface work Bias beencarried out on various other roads in the riding. „ TM .„ ■-••■■•■ MANGAPIKO RIDING.

Burns' Road: An engineering survey has been made of 60 chains of this road; plans' prepared for;forming to reasonable grade, and width, work being carried on by Surfacemen Curtis with team and the help;« ! of a snuJU gang ■ •■:•:.'•- ' Lowering Lake Road- culvert for Ngardto^Drainage-Board: have •been taken from between, the;Ngaroto lake upto Lake Road culvert, and on to the small -lake on tha-eas'tern ■side of Lake-Road. Unemployed relief works, No. 5 scheme: Work is being carried out by relief workers as follows: From Hamilton (1), excavating drains on Hamilton -Ngaruawahia Road; (3) forming footpaths on Norton Road; (3) drain work Rukuhia riding and footpaths, Melville. From Cambridge: Work on Hasnon's Road and McLarnon's Road. From Te Awamutu, work on Burns' Road and Owairaka Road deviation. Land development: For the benefit of the committee set up, I have inspected properties of Ellicott's, Threlkeld's and others, consisting of over 8000 acres, regarding roading, etc.
