FERTILISERS
SHRINKAGE VIEWED WITH CONCERN. A paragraph in the annual report of the Department of Agriculture draws attention to the shrinkage in the use of fertilisers owing to the present financial stress. This the Department rightly regards as a matter of "the utmost concern." As noted in a recent reference, the production of superphosphates, our staple manure, decreased in the year ended 31st March last by 45,000 tons, or 17 per cent. With the prolongation of the period of financial stringency this decline in the consumption of fertiliser will probably continue, with serious consequences to the productivity of our pasture lands, unless arrested by measures for assisting the farmer to increase the use of superphosphates. . The Department of Agriculture states that the Rural Intermediate Credits Board is facilitating advances to farmers in this connection, but it is plain that more generous assistance should be given until farmers are placed in a better position. The alternative is a period of costly deterioration which may destroy years of effort and seriously retard the rei covery of our primary industries.
