DISTRICT HAPPENINGS. An itinerant fruit vendor with his headquarters at Hamilton, fell foul of the Otorohanga police on Monday evening as a result of a telephone ring from a district settler, who stated that a man with a fruit truck was driving in an erratic manner along the main highway. Constable Fry located the culprit and arrested him for drunkenness. On the following morning he was convicted and fined £5 and costs. The bench did not interfere with his driving license, as the defendant pleaded that his living would be gone were he thus punished. The police gave the man a good character.

Bronchial troubles and severe colds are rife at present, and some of the cases have been severe, one such ending fatally, a 25-year-old son of Mr and Mrs A. Parkes, of Honikiwi, succumbing after a short illness. The child had been suffering from bronchial troubles, which developed into pneumonia. Messrs Curtis and Watts, Auckland, are the successful tenderers for the erection of the new school dental clinic here.

The Otorohanga Oddfellows Lodge held their half-yearly installation on Tuesday night when there was a large attendance of local and visiting brethren. D. 1.0. Bro. W. Copsey, of Te Kuiti, installed the following officers: N.G., Bro. F. M. Hilder; V.G., Sister M. J. Hunter; financial secretary, Bro. K. J. Liddy; secretary, Bro. J. Ireland; warden, Sister M. Kay. The members of Lodge Turanga, U.A.0.D., held their half-yearly meeting in the lodge room, when the following officers were elected: A.D., Bro. G. Eassey; 8.A., Bro. G. Lawrence; secretary, Bro. V. Fairbrother; treasurer, Bro. H. W. Atkinson; O. G., Bro. T. McCready; 1.G., Bro. H. Harris; A.D.B.’s, Bros. M. Howley, and A. B. Allan; V.A.D.B.’s, Bros. V. Meredith and A. J. Dobbs; minute secretary, Bro. G. H. Fry; auditor, Bro. J. F. Trapski. Under the various state schemes, approximately £3OOO will be paid to relief workers in the Otorohanga district, during the winter months. Seventy six men are working on district farms, under the No. 4a scheme. The cost of administration to date is £44 4s, a fraction under 15 per cent. The county clerk, Mr S. J. Fortescue, has willingly consented to a reduction of £1 per week for his unemployed labour (subsidy) activities, in order to help the funds, which can only be met out of unauthorised expenditure. The financial position of the various ridings comprising the Otorohanga County is as follows:—-Waipa, £197 16s 2d cr.; Te Rau-a-Moa, £32 15s 9d dr.; Wharepapa, £1192 16s 6d cr.; Honikiwi, £l3 10s 3d cr.; and Manga - orongo, £l9B 19s 8d dr. The roads throughout the whole county are in a generally good condition.

The honours of the Kio Kio Club’s past tennis season were awarded as follows:—Handicap Singles, ladies, Miss M. C. Ross; gentlemen, Mr F. W. Wylie. Silver cups, suitably engraved have been presented to the local champions for the 1930-31 season.
