TARIFF RETALIATION

FAILURE OF NEGOTIATIONS 1 WITH CANADA. (By Telegraph. Press Association). WELLINGTON, this day. The Government has decided that from to-day practically the whole range of imports from Canada will be deprived of the advantage of the British preferential tariff rates and placed on the general tariff list. This will mean that with a few exceptions, Canadian exports to New Zealand will be treated as foreign goods and taxed accordingly at the ports of entry. The Prime Minister states that the Government’s action has been taken in view of the complete failure to reach any satisfaction with Canada regarding reciprocal tariffs. Imports from Canada which will still be admitted at British preferential tariff rates are: —Gum boots; paper, other than wrapping and carbon paper, when imported in rolls not less than 10 inches wide; plain and bai’bed iron wire, including fencing wire.
