WORK ON FARMS

UNEMPLOYED MEN PLACED. Since the Unemployment Board's No. 4 scheme was launched on February 23, 4898 men have been given work on farms. The Unemployment Board pays a subsidy of 15s a week for single men and 25s a week for married men engaged by farmers, the actual wage being mutually arranged between the worker, and the farmer. The latter also provides board and lodging, subsidy of 33 1-3 per cent of the labour cost is offered by the board for contract work on farms, under section B of No. 4 scheme, the farmer making direct arrangements with the men who are to do the work. Up to Saturday last records show that under scheme 4A 3327 single men and 1068 married men were found employment, and that under scheme 4B 205 contracts were approved, and 503 men were employed. In addition, the Native Trust Department had approximately 400 men employed on developmental work on Motu Weka and Aohanga stations. The former is in Hawke's Bay and

the latter in Wellington province. The men were all registered as unemployed, and the Unemployment Board is contributing to the cost of the work. . . .
