HOCKEY
RODNEY V. WAIPA. Considerable interest is being shown in hockey circles in the match to be played at Te Awamutu next Wednesday (King's birthday) between representatives of the Rodney and Waipa Unions. This is the first representative match of the present season, and as it is probable that the Waipa team will be travelling south later in the season, as challengers for the coveted Norden Cup, at present held by Manawatu, there is a good deal of speculation as to the standard of play that will be exhibited in the Rodney contest. Rodney have always played a sterling game, and Waipa have for years looked upon them, as the most redoubtable opposition in the White Horse Cup contests —and with good reason, too, for Rodney have almost as good a record as Waipa in these annual tournaments among hockey teams from all parts of the Auckland province. In recent years a number of enthusiasts, with the view to cementing the friendship between the two associations, provided a cup that is now known as the Waipai-Rodney Cup, for annual competition between the elevens representing the two associations. Contests are played in alternate years at Te Awamutu and Warkworth. It may be added that next year Waipa, when meeting Rodney at Warkworth, will probably extend the tour to include Whangarei, to play the representatives of that centre. Waipa's team on Wednesday next will be: Goal, G. Jack (Waratahs); full-backs, L. Spiers (Paterangi) and R. Hinton (Waratahs); halves, A. O. Finch (Ramblers), V. Dunstall (Waratahs), and T. Finch (Waratahs); forwards, G. Finch (Paterangi), G. Wood (Waratahs), B. Spiers (Paterangi), G. Moore (Waratahs), and F. O. Civil (Ramblers). Emergencies: Forwards, B. Gibson and E. Ball; half, J. Linehan; back, R. Spiers.
