TOPICS OF. THE MOMENT.

ITEMS OF INTEREST. (Own Reporter.) (Our Resident Representative.) A largely attended social evening was tendered to friends and wellwishers of Mr G. Spencely Fry, of the local Bank of New Zealand, to celebrate his 21st birthday at his parents' residence on Thursday evening. Eulogistic speeches were made by Messrs W. Alexander (bank manager), G. At the Police Court on Friday, George Morton was charged with theft of 2s 9d in cash, and one goldfilled watch, valued at 40s, the property of an Otorohanga resident. Constable Fry detailed the circumstances that led to the arrest. Morton was a sailor (according to his story) 21 years of age, who landed in_Lyttelton by a Canadian steamer seven months ago. He was travellington northwards on foot and being hungry, he visited the residence of Nurse Gorrie, when there was no one at home. He entered by the back door, which was not locked, and seeing the money and watch he was tempted to take them. He was arristed at Kio'Kio, with the stolen goods in his possession. The Bench took a lenient view of the case, convicting the accused and admitting him to six months' probation. The watch and money were returned to the respective owners. The ordinary meeting of the Town Board was held on Thursday, when it was decided to at once clear the picnic grounds under Scheme 5, plant the area in trees and shrubs and lay down the open spaces in permanent grasses. It was decided to grade, form and metal the new stock route westward of the town. The six-inch water main will be extended along Te Kawa Street from Hinewai Street to Kakamutu Road. A representative deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited upon the Board, and brought up the questions of tar-seal-ing the main streets, septic tanks, fire plugs, straying and tethered stock, hawkers' licenses, by-laws, ladies' rest room (extension of open hours), speed of motor cars, parking same at various locations in the main streets, speed at intersections to be 15 miles per hour, and 25 limit through the streets._ beautifying the esplanade, suppression of exhaust noises from motor-cycles, and increased service from the traffic inspector. The subjects brought foi-ward by the deputation took a considerable time to discuss. The chairman thanked the Chamber for its suggestions, and prom'ised that all the matters brought forward would receive the earnest consideration of the Board.
