COUNSEL’S APPEAL FAILS.

John Spreull Currie, aged 34 years, a medical practitioner, of Otahuhu, was sentenced to six months’ impris onment for wilful and obscene exposure.

Counsel said accused deplored his conduct, and asserted that he had continually. struggled against the commission of the acts. Counsel thoughtthat although not insane Currie should be sent to a mental hospital for observation.

The magistrate, Mr F. W. Hunt, said no doubt everybody who committed such- offences was “out of gear,” but he had a duty to the public. In sentencing accused Mr Hunt left it to the prison authorities to say whether Currie should have the treatment he desired.

The Wellington firm of Messrs J. Nathan and Company has received the following market report from Messrs Trengrouse and Nathan, of London, dated 9th March: New Zealand butter, 120 s per cwt. New Zealand cheese prices are unchanged. Both markets are weak, with no business doing.

A decision to impose a levy of Is each on Auckland district members of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows to provide relief for members of the order in the earthquake district was reached at the annual coference of Manchester Unity Oddfellows at Otahuhu yesterday. The funeral of the late Mrs W. Smillie, of Ohaupo (formerly Miss Kathleen Turnwald, of Kaipaki), took place yesterday, interment being at the Ohaupo cemetery. The cortege was one of the largest ever seen at Ohaupo, and included many residents of Kaipaki,' Ngahinapouri, Ohaupo, and Paterangi, while there were dozens of beautiful wreaths. Deceased was .extremely popular, and the deepest sympathy is felt for her sorrowing husband and family of six young children, the youngest of whom is only eight months old.

Labour’s declaration of war on the Government because of the wages “ cut ” proposals was announced during the first sitting of the House of Representatives following the opening of Parliament yesterday. Reform’s attitude was not revealed, although Mr A. Harris (Waitemata) called for a return showing the saving likely to result from a 10 per cent “ cut ” in Civil Service and alternatively the saving estimated if the “ cut ” was graduated so as to fall less harshly on the lower-paid State employees.
