THE WAIPA POST. Printed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. TUESDAY, 10th MARCH, 1931. SPEED MADNESS?

FEW people will not be thrilled "by the- announcement that Captain Malcolm Campbell has created a new record in motoring speed. In 30 years the motor-car has been transformed from a clattering oddity preceded by a man with a red flag to an engine with a speed which at the time of its birth would have seemed to be reserved for projectiles. The actual value of this attainment is doubtful, nor has it been won without a lamentable loss of life. The world is, perhaps, speed mad, and, save to engineers, there may seem only further madness in forcing the record ever higher. It is a courageous and adventurous madness, however, of a type which led the early navigators over the uncharted waters, and while the spirit of adventure lives there will be men like Captain Campbell prepared to risk all for what may seem at the moment an end of unknown value. The rest may take pride in the fact that British engineering genius has once again proved itself unrivalled and that a Briton's bravery and skill have established what in these days of constant and startling progress, stands for the time as a world's record.
