DOMAIN BOARD
IMPROVEMENTS AT ALBERT PARK.
Members of the Borough Council sat as the Domain Board on Monday evening, Mr C. G. Downes presiding. Correspondence was read from the Waipa Cricket Association asking for an early statement of work proposed to be undertaken at Albert Park to improve the turf of the playing areas.. It was pointed out that the cricket season is near at hand, and if the part, of the ground that is so badly infests ed with rushes is to be ploughed up the cricketers will have to make arrangements to play elsewhere. Perhaps No. 3 football ground could be left while the other parts of the play-V ing area are treated. The Mayor said Mr Arthur Bygrave had offered to assist with his teams-' and contracting plant if the Board and sports bodies were intent upon effecting improvement. Mr Downes, said the time was opportune for determining upon a definite scheme. Inquiries he had made led to the opinion, that it would not be necessary to plough it. A better method would be to disc and scarify it, with a liberal, application of fertiliser and lime. Mr Gilbert said the part most needing attention was the hockey area. No. 3 football ground could be made first class by chain harrowing it and applying lime. The other areas should have the largest rushes grubbed out, and then given a thorough discing and harrowing, with grass seed, lime and manures. He had already arranged to have furze on No. 3 ground grubbed out. The chairman said he would prefer to have specifications prepared an<jL£* ; a contract let for the improvement, work.
Crs North and Gifford agreed with Cr Gilbert’s suggested treatment. To Mr Brown, Mr North said the growth was not swamp l'ushes. Mr Boekett said the rushes grew after the saleyards manure had-been applied. "Ilf Mr Brown said the ideal treatment was to tile drain the whole area, but that treatment would be beyond the . resources of the Council. Cr North advocated getting some earth for top dressing, especially on the hockey ground. The Mayor said he hoped a thorough job would be made -of it, so that there would be decent playing areas for football, hockey, basketball and cricket, and for the A. and P. Association’s show next February. ts - ; Eventually Messrs Spinley, North and Gilbert were authorised to confer and get improvement work put in. hand as soion as possible.
