COMBATING COMPETITION
RAILWAY BUSINESS METHODS CRITICISED. s, (By Telegraph. Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. The opinion was expressed at /a meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last evening that the railways were going to do a great deal of damage to the port of New Plymouth. It was stated that the railway authorities obtained the manifests of all vessels coming into the port and from the manifests took particulars of the number of consignments. The shipping companies were annoyed at this as they considered the papers were confidential. The railway authorities then went to the importer, it was alleged, and said that if he had sent his goods by rail the railage would have been so much, and that he would have saved a good deal. The Railways Department picked out as examples certain lines which suited its purposes. In reply, Mr H. J. Larkin, stationmaster, said that as regards circulars being sent to the New Plymouth importers, that was purely a business proposition. The Railways Department had merely notified merchants that they could get their goods at a cheaper rate. This had, in one instance of which he knew, made the shipping company reduce its charges.
