BUTTER UP; CHEESE DOWN.
A considerable increase in butter production and a decrease in cheese production for November and for the current season are revealed by the grading returns of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture issued yesterday. The figures show an increase of more than 41 per cent in butter-fat production for the four months of the season, compared with the corresponding period of last year. The Dairy Division’s figures show that the salted butter graded for November, 1929, was 13,569 tons, and the unsalted 231 tons, a total of 13,800 tons, compared with 11,970 tons salted, and 335 tons, unsalted, a total of 12,305 tons for November of last year; an increase of 12.14 per cent. For the four months ended November, 1929, the respective quantities were 33,440 tons and 541 tons, a total of 33,981 tons, compared with 30,368 tons and 646 tons, a total of 31,014 tons for the corresponding period of the preceding season, an increase of 9.56 per cent. DECREASE IN CHEESE. The cheese graded for November, 1929, comprised: White, 8049 tons; coloured, 3940 tons; a total of 11,989 tons, compared with 8293 tons white., and 3867 tons coloured; a total of 12,160 tons for November, 1928, a decrease of 1.40 per cent. The quantities for the four months ended November, 1929, were white 15,872 tons, coloured 8872 tons; a total of 24,699 tons, compared with 17,878 tons white and 8452 tons coloured; a total of 26,330 tons for the corresponding period of the preceding season, a decrease of 6.19 per cent.
