RACING LOCALLY ON SATURDAY. REVIEWS OF THE FIELD. A correspondent sends along the following comments on the local race meeting next Saturday “ for what they are worth.” In the Pirongia Hurdles Archeen and Wako King are likejfl sorts. Ti Tree and Valuation fancied for the Kihikihi Handicap: Praetor, Tenakoe and Biddy Comet may win something between them in the Waipa Plate. The Te Awamutu Cup finish should be hotly contested between Prodice and Corinax. Wenday and Motere should come in for good support in the Paterangi Handicap. Of the big field down to contest the Orakau Hack Handicap, Richfield, of the top weights and Prince of Orange, of the bottom weights, will prove useful. Joy Germ land Volimond, although not thought well of by the handicapper, should acacquit themselves well in the Flying l Handicap. In the Ohaupo Handicap, Flying Prince and Black Maire should be hard to beat. Contrary to the opinions of our correspondent, we give below views of “ Courier.” Catonian’s display at EllersMe gave

the impression that he should per-, form with credit in the Hurdles, with Archeen better than The Lamb at the weights. Wako King may have improved with his jumping, and if so the chestnut should make it merry. Ramblin’ Kid was a good horse but has been unsound, and may not be at his best. Mashoor is a plugger that is gradually improving in pace. Several in the Kihikihi Handicap have recent winning form, but of the fci, there is bound, to be solid support for Valuation, a good sort of hack. The most likely to trouble him at the weights are another pair from Te Rapa, Macroom and Lunette,. while Flying Prince will find the distance much more to his liking than in races he has recently contested. The draw for positions should affect investments in the Waipa Plate, as there is a big acceptance. Parfait Amour (if started) Perennis, Praetor and; Biddy Comet may be best backed. Praetor is much talked of because he ran second to Bennie in a two-year-old event at Ellerslie last season, but he has not been produced this season, and it may be unwise to rely on J.

charge. Perennis is bred to go fast, and has impressed in recent racing. Anyone of half a dozen of the others might win, but their form has not been disclosed. The Cup should see the trio at the top of the handicap strongly supported. Mr Loomb has already produced four winners of this event, and it is quite on the cards that his good mare, Prodice, who should have won a year ago, will pilot the field home. Corinax is an Auckland Cup winner, aniS his recent victory at Takapuna indicates that the Magpie gelding .is

fit and well. The Lover is not as 'classy as the two first-named, but is decidedly useful, and now has a very handy weight. King Emerald goes fast, but there is a doubt as to whether he will relish the ten furlongs. Thursby likes the sting out of the ground—he will get it »so on Saturday. Flying Juliet and Transformer perform best on hard tracks, but have not pleased in recent racing. Their weights are luxuries. Marble King is best known as as printer. Micrometer has done nothing to justify support in the class, but is certainly a promising hack. Hakanoa (rehandicapped 14 lbs for

a double win at Taumarunui) now tops the list in the Paterangi Handicap, and is not yet weighed out of it; but there will probably be more money for several others, notably Wenday, Glena Bay and Motere. Wenday should be first choice. Glena Bay is

not a good beginner, and has a long run at the finish of a race to overtake the leaders. Motere promised well earlier, but he “ tangles ” at the start of a race, and takes some time to get balanced. Cybele seems well placed, and may carry a lot more support than most people think. There is another big field in the Orakau Hack ,and a couple of good ones, Kawainga and Richfield, head the list. Indolent would be fancied if his condition was right. Many people have the idea that Te Hoia is a good one, and he is giving some opponents 9 lbs., but it should be noted that he is within 8 lbs of the top weights. Joy Girl and Lucky Alice are fairly on this season’s performances, r and Antique may justify some support. Patere won the Waipa Plate last year and was expected to go on to further successes, but unsoundness caused his retirement. Of the others Prince of Orange has been talked of quite a lot. We prefer to look to the top three in the handicap for the winner rather than the two mentioned by our correspondent, though if Tea Time was in last year’s form he would appeal most of all. Awarere, for a Railway Handicap winner, has disappointed this season but is able to gallop very speedily. Leitrim’s double win at Takapuna indicates that he is right at the top of his form, while Mervette is a genuine mare that is always hard to beat. The Begun has not pleased in recent efforts. Macroom and Town Bird were disappointments until lately, when they won in minor com-pa-ffcA-sdiile Storm Fiend surprised at Te Rapa, by winning a seven furlong hack race. Joy Germ goes very fast for five furlongs but appears to want matters all his own way to win over six furlongs—and he is unlikely to get all his own way in this company. Volimond is speedy and may win—but she cannot be recommended in the class. . V : " - The “ recovery stakes,” so far as investors are concerned, «is. rather puzzling, for most of the acceptork.Tjave engagements earlier in the f will be well to delay cision until the starters ar q^Hj|^nH TO-DAY’S TRAIN 1N Evidence of the of interest being ing was

a large number of local residents turned out at ar. early hour to see the trials. The morning was gloriously fine and the track in capital order, so that if the present climatic conditions continue the going on Saturday should be excellent. A large number of horses were exercised, most of them being given light tasks in view of the final gallops to-morrow morning, by which time it is anticipated most of the visiting horses will have arrived. Prominent among those participating in this morning’s tasks were Pegaway, Prodice, Awarere, Marble King. Prodice, ip particular, looked fit and did a very pleasing run over a mile and a quarter. Montere and Thurnus were another couple that attracted attention, doing a nice working gallop over eight furlongs, being together at the end of that journey. ~ , Several in the two-year-old class were given tasks in which they acquitted themselves to the satisfaction of their mentors.
