THE NATIVE MINISTER
VISIT TO KING COUNTRY.
TOUR OF INSPECTION.
The Minister of Native Affairs, the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata, arrived in Te Kuiti last Monday night. The object of the visit is to enquire into the matter of native leases, the question of the development of native areas, and a general survey of the King Country from the point of possible settlement. On morning, Sir Apirana received a ceremonial welcome at the local pa, when there were about 100 presentations of the Maori race present. After receiving a welcome the Minister outlined the object of his viMt. He .later received a deputation of settlers in regard to native leases and paid a visit to Oparure and Pio Pio.
The Minister is accompanied by Judge MacCormifik, of the Native Land Court, who was chairman of the recent Native Leases Commission, and who is now accompanying the Minister in connection with recommendations made in the Commission’s report. Messrs P. H. Jones and T. M. Hetet, of the Native Lands Consolidation Committee, who are in charge of this district, are also with the Minister.—Chronicle.
