RAILWAY CITIES

FOR WORKERS IN SPAIN. The General Association of Railway Employees and Workers in Madrid has formed a co-operative society, whose object is to build "railway cities" owned by its members. Ten thousand houses are to be built in the course of 15 years, the emplacement of which will be chosen near the principal centres of railway traffic. Fifty different models have already been planned and work is to begin as soon as the help from the railway companies and the State has been obtained. Subscriptions vary from 60 centimos to 3 pesetas a month, a small quota, but as 3000 members have already joined and the general association with a membership of 65,000 handles some 40,000,000 pesetas a year, there will be no difficulty on the score of capital funds. In order to avoid monotony in design, plans have been got out by five different architects and provision has been made for the building of schools, gymnasiums, parks and sports grounds, on which the Spanish working people stand in great need.
