THE CHOKING COW

When a cow gets a piece of turnip fast in her throat she manifests the facts through coughing, sneezing or blowing fitfully. Her stomach soon becomes distended with gas. The usual method of clearing the obstruction from the gullet is by means of a length of hose or a piece of strong rope about an inch in diameter, pushed down the animal's throat. This forcible means is doubtless advisable in urgent cases where prompt action is required; but if a bottle of linseed oil is handy let a little be poured down the animal's throat. This will often remove the obstruction without ttie use of a choke rope. Instead of oil, a handful of salt may be put in the cow's mouth. The salt' action upon the piece of obstructing turnip is to reduce it and let it slip down the gullet. Just test this for yourself. Take a slice of turnip and place a teaspoonful of salt on it. You'll see how rapidly the turnip slice diminishes:
