THE GIRL GUIDES
ENTERTAIN THEIR MOTHERS. A very happy little social was held at! the Parish Hall on Friday evening when the local company of Girl Guides entertained their _ mothers, and many friends of the Guide movement, with a concert. A distinguished visitor was Mrs Tombs, of Hamilton, who is District! Commissioner. Captain Ford welcomed her in a few well-chosen words, and hoped she would find her visit pleasant. For purposes of inspection by the commissioner the Guides (at almost fullest strength) paraded in horseshoe formation and Mrs Tombs expressed herself very pleased indeed. She then presented tre child-nurse badges and one dairymaid badge to successful candidates at recent examinations, and entertained the company greatly with a story about Guides’ uniforms. Then the mothers, who had been given a number when entering the hall, stepped forward to receive a present made by each one’s daughter for her. A really enjoyable concert programme was presented, including: Recitation, Patty Ashmore; novelty item, “Ten Little Nigger Boys,’ by members of the Thrush Patrol, attned as niggers—it was a very good item; pianoforte solo, Leila North; song, with ukelele accompaniment, Lorna Potts; recitation, _ Kathleen Glass; Hawaiian song, with instrumental accompaniment, Robin Patrol; recitation, Gladys Ohlson; patrol competition, Thrush Patrol winding thorn four 'others; recitation; Zoe Mensfort'h; trio, “Three Merry Travellers,” Lyn Ahier, Vera Ramey, and Eileen Holmes, in costume; recitation, Erna Boys; pianoforte solo, Muriel Chamberlain; vocal duet, AUeen Roberts and Lily Tod; country dance, a bevy of Guides; novelty game, “Ninepins,” another squad; vocal trio, with instrumental accompaniment, B. At the close of the programme Captain Ford expressed the thanks of the whole company for Commissioner Tombs’ presence, and hoped to have opportunity again of welcoming her.
