INFANT'S BODY FOUND
ON MAIN TRUNK EXPRESS. (By Telegraph—Press Association).. AUCKLAND, Friday. The dead body of an infant was' found beneath a seat in a secondclass carriage of the ordinary express' this morning when it arrived at Auckland from Wellington. After all the. passengers had disembarked a porter espied a brown paper parcel lying on, the floor of the carriage. He picked it up, and, placing it beneath his arm, proceededthrough to the guard's van. He then took the parcel, which was in box shape, to th left luggage office, and handed it over to the porter in charge.. The porter left it on the counter for a few moments, and, after having recorded the'fact that a left parcel had been deposited, picked it up and hurriedly placed it among the lost goods* In doing so, however, his suspicions* were aroused. He called in an officer" of the Department, and preliminary ! investigations did not satisfy them,, so the police were summoned. Further investigations showed that the parcel contained the dead body of an infant, apparently no more than 48 hours old. It was wrapped in an inner covering consisting of an oilei* sheet contained in a cardboard box, and finally wrapped in brown paper and tied with stringy
