POOR LIVING CONDITIONS
CONCERN AT ARAPUNI. As indicated by his remarks at the monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council on Friday, Cr E. J. Darby, riding member for Putaruru which includes Arapuni, is rather concerned over certain conditions of living in and around Arapuni, and the possibility of something in the nature of slumming in the future. Cr Darby introduced the matter by stating that under the Town Planning Act a local body has the power to appoint itself the controlling authority and further may appoint its riding members as authorities in the respective riding districts. In the Arapuni district there existed living conditions that were rather unsatisfactory. He knew of one case where seven persons were living on a quarter acre. He thought the council should take steps to prevent anything in the nature of slumming. Cr. S. H. Judd: If we do as you suggest what will be our liabilities later on?
Cr Darby: None whatever! Cr Judd: I'm not so sure about that.
The engineer pointed out that the county by-laws prevented buildings being erected on less than quarter acre sections in the townships in the county. No action was taken, Cr Darby remarking that he would table the Town Act at the next meeting.
