MORTALITY RATE UNCHANGED.

Following are general statistics dealing with the Work of the Waikato Hospital during the year 1927-28 (last year’s figures appear in parentheses): Patients in hospital, Ist April, 1927, 189 (206); patients admitted during year, 3194 (2863); total receiving treatment, 3383 (3069). Of these there were discharged cured, 2200 (1982); discharged relieved, 638 (598); discharged unrelieved, 144 (144); died, 157 (156); remaining in hospital, Ist April, 1928, 244 (189). . occurred within 24 hours of admission. The daily average number, of patients in hospital was 210 (198); . the average length of stay in hospital was. d 22% days (25i); the number of oper- < ations performed was 1588 (1417); and there were two deaths under anaesthetic. : .• ’ In addition to fracture cases there were 114 cases of injuries due to accidents; 17 were cases of burns and one death occurred. There were 25 confinements.

During the .year 1588 operations were performed. The nresent operating theatre was built in 1905, and comparative figures show an extraordinary increase in the number of operations performed each year. The figures are: 1910, 406; 1918, 943; and 1927, 1588. As far as the massage department is concerned, 350 patients were treated in 1927-28, consisting of 233 in-pati-ents and 74 out-patients. In all 5292 treatments weire given. During the Vea»r 7704 specimens were examined in the laboratory, comprising 1384 from private practitioriy ers, other hospitals, and public health;!’ the remaining 6320 being from Waikato Hospital. The total was 202.1 more than last year. The increase isdue partly to general routine work and partly to epidemics of typhoid fever in Rotorua, Taumarunui, and Thames.

Over 1620 cases had been examined and treated in the X-ray department, compared with 1319 last year. There were 1190 ultra-violet ray treatment cases. •<(.-,
