A PIONEER OF TARANAKI
DEATH OF MR NEWTON KING. .(By., Telegraph, -r- Press Association.) . ,n •, NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday. The death’ occurred ■ unexpectedly 1 this afternoon of ! ; Mro Newton 1 King, s chairman ofr.-Newton King, Ltd., at the age of 72 .years. Mr King went, to Stratford yesterday on business and attended a meeting of the committee of the Taranaki Jockey Club in New Plymouth in the evening. . Mr King was born in New Plymouth in 1855, and was the second son of Mr Thomas King, one of the first settlers. At various times Mr King held important public positions and had, in many ways, been actively associated with the growth and development of Taranaki. He was keenly interested in sport, especially the turf, ahd was president of the Taranaki Jockey Club. He was a successful owner of racehorses. . i There are two brothers, Sir Truby King, of Wellington, and Mr ‘ Henry King, of New Plymouth. Mrs Newton King survives apd there; are three sons, Mr Truby King, of Stratford, and Mr Waldyve King and Mr Eliot King, of New Plymouth, and two daughters, Mrs Sydney Allen, of New Plymouth, and Mrs Noel Fookes, of Waitara.
