ARE RAILWAYS ADEQUATE?
COMPETITION FOR TRAFFIC,

An unexpected request was made' to the Wellington City Council in a letter from the Railway Department which, addressing the council as the licensing authority under the Motor Omnibus Traffic Act, asked -it to refuse the applications for licenses by the proprietors of the bus services between W el-in g ton, Petone and Hutt„ on the ground that an adequate railway service between those points already existed. The chairman of the by-daws committee stated that it had been resolved to refuse the request, and the co-urici/l endorsed the committee's action.
