SYSTEMATIC ROBBERY
ACCOUNTS MANIPULATED. AN EXEMPLARY SENTENCE. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday For stealing £2OOO belonging to the National Bank of New eZaland, William Henry Melvin was sentenced today to be detained for reformative treatment for three years. Mr Sargent, counsel for Melvin, said accused was twenty-seven years of age, and had been employed in the bank eleven years. He was an exceedingly capable officer. Melvin had speculated in mining shares, as well as “slow” horses. The thefts extended over three years. For ten months before he was charged he had not stolen any money, having realised the futility of his conduct. Mr justice- Stringer: What was this young man’s salary? Mr Sargent: £3OO a year. He. is single. His Honor said prisoner hall robbed his employers by systematic manipulation of hank records, and it was necessary to impose a substantial sentence.
