MILK BY RAIL
A return issued at Euston sihows that rather more than 100,000,000 gallons of milk were carried from stations on the London, Midland and Scottish Railway during the year ended 31s't March, 1925. In addition, great quantities were conveyed that originated on other lines. The L.M.S., which carries nearly half of the country's milk, has distribution depots all over London, and about '25,000,000 gallons are brought into the metropolis in the year. "Our busiest milk hours at Euston," said a station official, "are between midnight and 2.30 a.m. During this time there Js a constant service of milk specials into the dock, which has been expressly constructed for this purpose, so that there need be no lifting of the heavy .chujrns. Oaving to the perishable nature of milk, special regulations obtain for it to be' speeded up in every possible Avay. For instance, no milk van ils allowed to be attached to a goods train, and, all milk specials are signalled a s express passenger trains."
