Sir Joseph Ward was unfortunate in his reference to Great Britain's attitude upon the wheat question. Freetrade in wheat was well enough so long as Britain was the great centre of industrial enterprises and finance. But the position has undergone a vast change, and it is of small moment to her people to 1 have a cheap loaf if over a million of them are out of employment and are enly, enabled to live through the medium of the dole which is at oncq a costly burden upon the State and demoralising to the manhood of the nation. New Zealand has nothing to learn from such an experience except to avoid a policy which is attended hy such destructive results.— "Oamaru Mail."
