FIRE AT RAETIHI

THREE HOUSES BURNED.

RAETIHI, Monday

Fire destroyed two houses and some outbuildings at Raetihi belonging to Mr S. Barakat, at 11.30 o’clock last evening. :

The fire brigade, which was on the scene was practically helpletes, as the flamlcs were fanned by a high wnid. Mrs Baraka’t was awakened by smoke which entered, the bedroom. She gave the alarm, and the seven occupants of the .house escaped in their night attire. The houjses, which were in close proximity ito each other, were totally destroyed. All the furniture andl personal effects were losit. The property was inisured for £7OO. Mr Barakat estimates his loss at £SOO.

Another fire occurred at 10.45 p.m. on Saturday, wliexr a house of four rooms, on the outskirts of Raetihi, owned by Mr G. A. Hunt and occupied by Mr W. Hutchings, Avas destroyed. Mr Hutchings, his wife, and three young children escaped in their night clothes, Hut Avere unable to reach another little girl from inside the house. Fortunately the child Avas observed at the dining room window, Avhich wa s smashed and the childl resound. Had it not been for this fact the child Avould have lost its life. Everything Avas destroyed. The house was insured for £!200.
