WHAREPUHUNGA ROADING

SETTLERS WAIT ON COUNTY COUNCIL. '. A deputation from Wharepuhunga, • Messrs McCarter and Milner, waited on the Otorohanga County Council at the meeting on Wednesday in connec- V tion with the: necessity for metal on the Ngaroma road. , ~ . !' fIVTr Milner stated that ithe.; Prehiier had promised a subsidy of £2o(>9 and' that £SOO would be at -once available. They had got the £SOO, but had not 'been able to raise the loan money. He' had seen the Premier again and, also Messrs J. A. Young and 'Stewart Reid at Hamilton and he had pressed the necessity of another &LSO0 7 at once. What they wanted was for th l © j.Council to pass a resolution representing to the Public Works Department the urgent necessity of the metalling ask-. ed for and the £ISOO Ito carry out the work. The distance to be metalled was some five miles. .He.had not yet received any authority from the Council for the spending of the £SOO men- ' tioned and they urgently wanted such authority as also for the £ISOO which would be available as a special allocation, i Mr McCariter thought the present was a very opportune time to press the matter seeing that the unemployment question was so pressing. The road was urgently required if only to enable the carting of manure, etc., to be practicable. The first .allocaltion of the particular sum of money mentioned. should be for the'metalling re- ' ferred to. The engineer read correspondence from the Public Works Department in. connection with the matter and traced ithe incidence of all that had transpir- , ed anent the matter. The difficulty was that the- Council could not see how it could raise the necessary portion of the proposed loan. The clerk stated that they had tried Wellington, Auckland and other financial centres, but unsuccessfully. He had, however, 1 heard of a chance of raising the sum required through the Union Bank. If they could, only raise the money in the meantime there * would not be much trouble about the * v subsidy. _ ~ The chairman said that the Council could be relied upon to do their uitmost to'obtain the £ISOO subsidy this year and! without delay. ' The. deputation having withdrawn the matter was further discussed. The engineer said that Mr Milner had done a certain amount of work himself and he (Ithe engineer) had undertaken to see him paid for same. Vt course there had. been no formal authority given for same. Cr Thomson objected to the principle of men being allowed to do work without authority. There should have been tenders called and a contract leU The chairman said there was no liability on ithe Council in the matter, but . Mr ftlilner had) done the, work. ;.- Cr Thomson was of opinion that Mr Milner should be paid.for the Work done by him though it had been .done without authority. He moved that the matter be deferred and that tenders be called, as soon as Ithe £ISOO expected to be raised is availablebut fcqt before. It wa s not legal or businesslike to anticipate loans. The motion was carried.
