RECIPROCAL TRADE

In a speech before the Royal Agricultural Society, its president (Mr W. •Perry) was reported as saying that the United States duty on imported butlter —increased from 8 to 12 cents as from sth April—was probably prohibitive of New Zealand butter; and he emphasised the fact that already the United States takes only a 'little over £4,000,000 worth of goods from New Zealand, While sending us almost £9,0001,000 worth (says the Evening Post).

In the New Zealand Industrial Bulletin, Mr A. Seed compares Mr Perry's complaint with a recent resolution of the Wanganui Farmers' Union to the ' effect that the duty be removed from all imported* timbers. "These-same-farmers (comments Mr, Seed) appear.to overlook the fact thai a very large proportion of our excessive timber imports come from the United States, so we have them on the one hand urging the Government to open our doors' still wider to this foreign competition, and on the other hand quite justly complaining that the United States is virtually prohibiting the export of New Zealand butter to that country." .
