ART UNIONS
The excuse tor the flood of art unions, which has deluged the Dominion for many months past, is that they have been promoted mainly, for the sake of individual gain, but m order to provide means of recreation which are of value to a section of the community. It is complained, however, with abundant reason that _tne effect of this succession of art unions has been to foster the spirit of gambling which, inherent in the individual is only too rife in all classes of society . |A pronouncement which has been made on the subject" by the Prime Minister is all the more timely on that account. . . Thoughtful men and women who agree with the Prime Minister and will applaud him for his outspokenness, are anxiously looking for the end of the art union craze, as promised some (months ago . by _Mr Bollard. The list of authorisations must surely by this time be approaching the point of exhaustion, and the Prime Minister’s emphatic expression of opinion should be sufficient to. prevent any re-opening of the list. — Otago Daily Times.
