“NO PARKING HERE”

NEAR STREET CORNERS.

NEW PARKING PLACE NEAR MONUMENT.

On quite a number of occasions in the past year or so the local Borough Council has under consideration matters concerning the motor traffic, not the least aspect of which is the parking of cars in the main street for, in many instances, inordinately lengthy periods. The subject again cropped up at last nights meeting. Cr Jeffery asked what was being done regarding the parking of cars. Hie had noticed several cars obstructing, street corners, thus constituting a danger to other vehicular traffic and to pedestrians also. Or McCarroll '.suggested making a parking area of the vacant section be-, hind the War Memorial. That was a very suitable place. Cars could be left there all day and would relieve congestion. He knew of one man who. actually claimed a certain stand as his own particular property on Thursdays and Saturdays. (Laughter.) He was not .referring to shoppers, but to those car owner's who leave their vehicles for an hour or more..

Cr Downes said he understood notice boards, bearing words such as ‘No Parking Here’ were to he obtained for use in keeping cars away from street corners.

Cr McGechie said in Te Aroha cars may not be parked in the main street longer than one hour. At Hamilton the time allowance was half an hour. Matamata had notices indicating parking localities. Cr Montefiore commended Cr McCarroll’s suggestion for a parking place behind the War Memorial. The chairman agreed,, but thought it deserved more mature consideration before a definite decision was come to. He did not want to drive cars out of the business area.

It was proposed to erect signs forbidding parking within half a chain of any corner.

Cr McGechie said these restrictions would apply to all traffic. Then there should be a time allowance for cars in other parts of the streets. That would not prevent shopping and the transfer of goods from shops to cars; the latter would have ample time. Discussion then revolved round where the actual corner of the street is—whether the kerbing corner or the building corner. C McCarroll said he wa s sure, many motorists would be glad to avail themselves of the parking area near the War Memorial.

Cr McGechie said he for one would prefer it to leaving the car in the main street for an hour. When it was mentioned that the vacant section would have to be improved, and footpath crossings provide ed, Cr McGechie said the sides of Teasdale and Bank Streets were available for cars parking.
