In the space of a few minutes, at ISotlieby’s, London, two books Avere sold for £ll,lOO. Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbacb, the American who has become famous as the purchaser pi! more than a million pounds’ worth of ancient English books, accomplished one great coup at the sale. His prize, which he acquired, for £3900, Avas two quarto Shakespeares—“The Historie of Henry IV.” and the "Second Part of Henry IV.” The first Avas printed in 1604, and now only three other copies are known, and they are imperfect. The “'Second Part -of Henry IV.” is exceedingly rare. It is dated 1600. No other separate edition of this play Ava s printed before 1700, and, including imperfect copies, only ten are known of the first issue, and only nine of the second. The second important sale Avas the autographed manuscript of John Mil'ton’s earliest verses. This is the famous “Milton Ovid Script” discovered by Professor Candy in 1921. It realised the great price of £7200, after spirited bidding, the name of the purchaser being given as ‘'Mr Morrison.” Earlier in the day a first folio Shakespeare, mended and restored, was sold‘for £3500.
