Fifty years ago Mr Alexander Graham Bell, an American gentleman, went to England and conducted experiments in the use of the telephone, demonstrating its utility to Queen Victoria and the British Association; but h failed to convince the official mind, and the chief engineer of the Post Office advised against its adoption hy the Government. The development of the instrument by private enterprise followed, and in 1912 the State had to purchase at an enormous co s t what it could have had for the outlay of a trifling sum.
