GOOD BUTTER

FROM YEW ZEAL AM). During his recent visit to England Mr W. T. Grundy, of Masterton, until recently a member of the Wellington Education Board, visited Stoke Poges, where, as is the custom, v he paid a visit to the grave of Thomas Gray, the author of the famous “ Elegy.” Whilst there the vicar of Stoke Poges was exceedingly kind ond obliging to the visitor, and showed him many places of historical interest. When he heard that Mr Grundy was from New Zealand he said he had something that he must tell him, as it had claimed his attention. One of his parishioners, who was about to leave the district, had been in receipt of butter from a certain store in the town, with which butter he had been very satisfied. Indeed, one of his regrets at leaving was that he might not be able to get the butter he had becoihe used to. He told the Stoke Poges storekeeper this, and much to bis surprise the man assured him that he Avould be able to buy the same butter almost anywhere; he had only to ask for and insist on getting New Zealand butter. When in Birmingham Mr Grundy was passing along the Bristol Road one day when he saw a special display of butter in a corner grocery. He was so much struck by the get-up, texture, and colour of this butter that he went inside to make inquiry. “Isn't that New Zealand butter in your window?” he asked the shopkeeper.

“It is,” said the man, “and very good butter it is.” “ if that is the case don’t you think you ought to label it as coming from New Zealand?” Mr Grundy said. “All you have on it is ‘ Co-operative butter.’ That does not tell your people where such good butter comes from.” “ No, that is not so. But this is the ‘ Co-operative Store,’ and we want to build up a name for good butter. It's all in the wav of business.”

“Well, I’m an Englishman,” replied Mr Grundy, “ and I think that you ought to give some credit to the country of origin, so that people may know where the good stuff comes from.”
