OTAGO MEDICAL SCHOOL

COST OF EXTENSION APPROVED BY COUNCIL (By Telegraph. Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Wednesday. At a special meeting ofthe University Council, Sir Lindo Ferguson, Dean of Medical Faculty, presented a lengthy -report on the needs of the medical school. Referring to- the cost ol new bui.dings, he put this at possibly £IOO,OOO for the library, final year block, public health block, mortuary block, and stated that annual recurMent, expenditure would ultimately reach an additional £13,000. Speaking of maintenance costs, he said that the professors were being paid under three-quarters of the salaries given by Australian schools, while junior teaching positions were blind alleys. He estimated there would be the following increases in the annual expenditure (professors’ salaries at £1100): Anatomy, £1700; physiology, with the new department’s biochemistry and pharmacology, £3100; pathology, £1800; bacteriology and public health. £IBSO. This amount would be materially increased if the present arrangement with the Public Health Department for the training of technicians were to be terminated. The department of medicine would require another £SOO, and surgery and additional £550. Midwifery and gynecology should have an additional £SOO, special departments £IOO, library £IOOO, maintenance of buildings £IOO, direction of school £I2OO. Sir Lindo Ferguson further stated that the school had now attained such a size that the Dean should occupy the position of director, receiving sufficient remuneration to recompense him for those onerous duties. After discussion the council resolved to approve “That the reports as to the requirements of the school be put into modifications -in details as circumstances may later suggest, and the scheme be forwarded to the Minister.”
