PORKOLOGY

ADVICE TO PIG BREEDERS A Porkologist, or specialist in pork production, is relatively rare in this country (writes “Vico" in “Piss”). The seasonal eleven I for pork, although perhaps becoming less pronounced, is still :oo sharp to make all-tlie-year-round porker-rearing a general policy. Nevertheless, the -winter demand for extra pork serves a useful purpose for pig-breeders. Last year, celebrated as it was for downpour and mud production, caused many breeders to resolve that from November to March, as a minimum, they would have all stock under cover The more fortunate conditions this season must not cause this experience to be forgotten. Preparations should be made beforehand to see that the necessary accommodation is available. In many cases more pigs than places will be found. It is hej - e where the porker market relieves the position, enabling a larger stock to be carried through the autumn than would be possible were there no such outlet. In all instances a little special attention is rewarded. The importance of grading the animals cannot be overemphasised. The true porkological pig is young, correct weight for the demand of the particular market, neat, and not excessively fat. Little difficulty will be found in getting the right price for good animals, providing their quality is standardised and reliable, and all second-grade animals should be disposed of separately. The presence of an odd pig here and there which is on the “shady” side of bacon age, yet of correct porker weight by virtue of its stunted growth, ruins with its “rhino” hide the price for the whole bunch.
