WAIKATO RIVER TRADE

DEVELOPMENT OF SHIPPING. NEW TUG TO BE BUILT. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) HAMILTON, Friday. The development of the transport trade on the Waikato River by the Roose Shipping Company is leading to a.- considerable enlargement of the company's fleet. Following the commissioning, a few days ago, of the big new stern-wheeler Rawhiti, the assembling of a new tug, specially constructed in England for the firm, is to be started at Mercer in a couple of months. Thi9 vessel will be 68 feet long, with a draught of only 2 feet 6 inches, and is to be fitted with triple screws driven by powerful engines. The tug will be capable of towing six fully-laden barges, each carrying fifty tons, at a good pace against the flow of the stream. The company hopes to build at an early date another iron barge to carry a floating crane, for use on any part of the navigable stretch of the river. The obsolete stern-wheel steamer trader is to be dismantled and used as a cargo toarge. . . The paddle steamer Manuwai is being overhauled and repainted m readiness for the summer excursion season on the river.
