EFFORTS BY ARGENTINE SHEEP BREEDERS

HARKED IMPROVEMENT. It is not surprising that more interest is being taken toy flockmasters in the acquisition of the best and most acceptable type of stock sheep to improve and maintain the quality and stamina of Argentina's valuable flocks (says a writer in the Review of the River Plate). A few years- ago sheep were worth very little and despised by many who 'will he wishing to-day Cheat they had not disposed of their flocks. The future of the sheep trade was never more promising than it is at present, and those who have confidence in their sheep, that were the standby in the early days, will now reap their just reward in the satisfactory prices ruling for all classes of sheep. The Lincoln has been the great improving agent of the Sheep of Argentina, as the 'Shorthorn has revolutionised the original light, leggy type of native 'beasts into the magnificent cattle of to-day. The use of the Lincoln ram gave much heavier - bodied sheep and also greatly increased their yield of wool. The introduction to Argentine of the New Zealand type of Lincoln set a new fashion and brought about a change ill the type of Lincolns that had formerly been hred and shown, and though visiting 'Home judges have frequently criticised the deviation from the accepted English standard, there is no doubt that they can advantageously he mated with the bigger-framed and more open type of home-bred animals. The New Zealand type of Lincoln, as found most acceptable there, possesses the merits of great freight and better quality wool., though their lesser frames and fine hone have been their disadvantage. The infusion of the New Zealand hloocl is advantageous in improving the quality of the fleece, while the size of the flock can he maintained by the reversion to the use of the Home type of Lincoln.
