FIRE AT PICTURE SHOW

A COURAGEOUS YOUNG- MAN

(By Telegraph. Press Association.) DARGAVILLE, This Day. A fire last night in the operating box of the Pukehuia settlers' hall destroyed' a film to the value of five hundred sterling. The picture performance was proceeding at the time when the film caught fire, igniting other films in the room. Whilst the operator (Currie) was extinguishing the reel in use a young man (H. 'Snowden) courageously rushed into the operating box and carried out the Hazing film, being seriously burnt in the act. The picture performance was being given under the auspices of the Y. M. C. A., who have been particularly unfortunate recently as only a little over a month ago they had a quantity of film destroyed in their own hall which was totally destroyed by fire. Beyond the loss of the film and damage done to the operating box and projecting machine no other serious damage was done to the present hall. The young man Snowden, who was very severely burnt while removing the film from the building was also a hero of another courageous act in the afternoon when he rescued a young girl from drowning in the Wairoa river nearby the scene of the fire.
