DEATH OF A JOCKEY

THE LATE S. WALLS. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Monday. The death occurred this morning of Samuel Walls, one of the best-known cross-country horsemen of Auckland. Deceased received a bad fall while riding Rafferty in the Hunters’ Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday week,, but he rode again on the following Monday. Subsequently he became ill, and tetanus developing he passed away this morning. The deceased was very popular and a capable horseman, both on' the flat and over fences. A couple of years ago he was attached to F. D. Jones’ stable at Riccarton, and rode many winners* scoring several times on( 'Mustard Pot. He later t&ok up his residence in Auckland, where he became attached to A. J. Julian’s stable, and subsequently to that of J. Williamson. ,'He made a trip to Sydney, where he rode Fittsworth, and then returned to become a freelance, his services being always in demand by owners of jumpers. His best win was when h<| steered General Advance to victory in the Canterbury Grand National Steeplechase at Riccarton. The deceased was 25 years of age, a single man, and his parents reside in Wellington.
