SHEEP DIPPING LOSSES

DEVON ASKS MINISTRY TO REVISE STRENGTH OF DIPPING BATH.

The serious losses of sheep after double dipping were discussed by the Barnstaple branch of the English Farmers’ Union on 24th July, and a resolution asking the Ministry of Agriculture to revise the strength of the dipping solution to two baths of equal strength was adopted. Mr P. Oram (secretary of the Barnstaple and District Agi’icultural Discussion Society) proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture be requested to revise the strength of the solution for the double dipping of sheep to two baths of equal strength—o.l per cent of total arsenic, including not less than 0.07 per cent of soluble arsenic. Mr J. Gaydon thought the resolution was rather late in the day, because a large number of sheep had already been dipped in the stronger solution, and he would lvather ask that a longer period be allowed between the dippings. Mr A. Turner mentioned that in the Exeter district there were thousands of sheep suffering from scab, and he thought it would be an impossible task to try to delete the second dipping or to alter the period.

The chairman (Mr Dullam) thought it would take a clever man to ascertain the strength of the dip after three hundred sheep had passed through it. Mr W. Stapleton (Chittlehampton) seconded Mr Oram’s motion, which was adopted /and it was decided to forward it to the Exeter executive for their consideration.
