RUGBY UNION CONCERT

■AH ENJOYABLE ENTERTAINMENT. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Though there were counter attractions, the attendance at the Waipa Rugby Union concert last evening at the Town Hall was well up to expectations, and patrons appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Mr Ces. Corboy had arranged a particularly good programme of vocal and instrumental items —indeed it can be said that seldom has a concert audience here been privileged to hear three such pleasing lady vocalists as Mrs'Monaghan (Auckland), Mrs Ramsbottom and Miss Savill. All three were in excellent voice and had to respond to vociferous encores. Other contributors to the programme who greatly were Messrs Bert Bey (comic songs), G. Osborne (violin solos), A. Boswell and C. Corboy (songs). The accompaniments were ably played by Miss Savill, Mrs Osborne and Messrs Stevens, Hey and White.

The Mayor, Mr ,L. G. Armstrong, took the opportunity during an interval to sincerely congratulate the contributors to a delightful concert, which all present had enjoyed. (Applause). The Waipa Rugby Union was fortunate in having such supporters. It was satisfactory also to be able to comment favourably upon the standard of Rugby seen last season in this district, and he hoped the standard would be steadily improved each season so that when the next All Black team for Great Britain is being arranged the selectors will look to this district for at least one player. Continuing, Mr Armstrong said that one of his most pleasant duties that evening was, in conjunction with Mrs Wm. Taylor (Patroness of the Rugby Union and a great supporter of football in this district for many years") to present the many valuable trophies won during the season just closed. It was remarkable the even distribution of those trophies. Mr Armstrong then announced the winners, and asked representatives of each club concerned to receive their trophies on behalf of the club as follows:—The Spear Cup, Te Awamutu Seniors (winers of 1925 Senior championship) ; Nation Rosebowl, Te Awamutu Seniors; Ballistite Cup, Pirongia Seniors (winners of knock-out round); Anderson and Main's Insurance Cup, Pirongia Seniors (runnersup in championship); ~W. G. Park (Shield, Rovers Juniors (winners of championship); Teddy Shield, Te Awamutu District High School (winners of inter-schools championship); Third Grade Cup, Ohaupo team; gold medals for most improved players— Seniors (Mr S. McNamara's) Ralph Smith, Te (Awamutu Club; Juniors (Mr T. Davis') Cyril Parish, Methodist Club; Third Grade (Mr R. Henderson's), R. Parish, Methodist Club; Mr Muir's set of caps to winners of Senior championship, Te Awamutu Club; Mr ;N. F. Goodall's set of caps to winners of Junior championship, Rovers Club.

Then followed something of a surprise. The Mayor called upon Mr F. Quin, president of the Union, to receive a fine photo enlargement of the executive officers as an appreciation of his activities during the past two years as chairman of the executive. The presentation was loudly applauded, after which the recipient said he was delighted at the' expression of goodwill and appreciation of his services. He was proud to be associated with such representatives of the Rugby clubs.

Mr Armstrong also called upon Rev. H. White for a similar honour, s in view of that gentleman's keen and valued help as an executive member and a referee. Mr Armstrong remarked that the gift was something in the nature of a farewell gift, for all regretted to learn that Rev. White would be leaving Te Awamutu before next football season. Mr White, acknowledging the presentation, said that if he had been of any service to the Rugby game he was pleased, and the recognition in such a delightful form would always recall pleasant memories. The '.Waipa players and officials were some of the best sportsmen he had ever been associated with; they had differed at times with him—of course they were wrong then —but they had always been keen to do the right thing. The players were fortunate in having such conscietious men on the controlling body. Both enlargements autographed toy each of the members of the Audience, which included a ma ; • •*.,, nf nlavers. then sang lusaiy CThey" Are Jolly Good Fellows," as a specfal compliment to the recipients of honours. r pf er red to The Mayor, concluding, referred to *\>Z IP-tsons to be learned on the plajor competition by schools' teams He b e r g sr£^« S any of the other trophies he had gSaSSfI that night. (Applause).
