WHAREPUHUNGA NOTES

HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETING

(Own Correspondent.)

The householders’ meeting which eventuated in the local school on Monday last was a very representative one, in fact, the largest ever held in the district, showing that the majority of the residents take a keen interest in school xnatters. The balance sheet presented to the meeting showed that the school fund had to its credit slightly over £lO, which is very good indeed for a small district.

A proposal that a deputation wait on the Minister of Education with a view to procuring a new school’was carried unanimously. The aid of the member for the district, Mr Lye, and the representative on the Education Board, Mr Boddie, is also to be solicited to help the deputation in their project. In the meantime the Committee will endeavour, to obtain control of the school site of ten acres opposite the present building in order that a portion of it may be planted in trees and the rest put in grass for use as a horse •paddock. It was pointed out that the present school building belongs to the settlers and is erected on the cemetery reserve; ; thus the Committee are unable to obtain a title to .the land, and so are prevented from having the building insured, a fact which is very unsatisfactory to them. , A resolution was carried congratulating the teacher on the excellent results obtained at the annual examinations.

The voting for five members to form the new Committee resulted as follows: E. S. Watson 10, W. Thomson 10, J. Luke 9, S. Pratt 9, F. Gooder 9, J. Duncan 5, iH. Kinzett 5, J. Findlater 2. Mr Watson was subsequently elected chairman, Mr Thomson treasurer, and Mr Gooder secretary. LEASE OF RESERVE WANTED. The settlers of the district have resolved to get into communication with the Minister of Lands to see if it is possible to have the Hingaia township reserve of about 80 acres leased for a term of years. At present it is a home for rabbits and noxious " weeds and greatly mars the look of the district.
