SCHOOL COMMITTEE AFFAIRS.

Sir, —In your issue of May 7th your editorial adversely criticises the action of the seven members of the newlyelected School Committee for resigning in a body as a protest against the defeat of Mr C. F. Battson. If that was the sole contents of the letter sent to the Board of Education,' I must agree with you'that their action would have been childish in the extreme; but the reason given, “to force another election, when it was hoped a representative gathering would be present to decide the issue ” puts an entirely different aspect on the matter. To suggest that the meeting of householders of last Monday was a representative one, is pidicif-lous, as there were only a few vacant seats in the theatre (where a cantata was being staged) at - the time the election took place. To say that the two former gatherings of householders were smaller goes to prove nothing, for on both those occasions there was no election. Personally I am quite proud to belong to that class of people who may be childish, , but still believe in such a thing as principle, and backing up a pal, when they think hq has not had a fair run, even if it does cost me the loss of a seat oh a committee,\ for which one receives neither remuneration nor thanks from some sections of the press. It would have been a more kindly action on the part of your paper to have reminded the public of some of the good works accomplished by the late chairman, both for the be- , nefit of the school and town. Seemingly the editorial bump of gratitude is not well developed, even to the extent of not being able to realise that home of your fellow townsmen ape capable of doing an action against their own interests. Thanking you in anticipation for inserting these few lines, which are .not necessarily the views of the other six signatories to the letter of resignation, I ana, etc., G. S. CLARKE,
