THE HOLIDAYS.
CHRISTMAS SHOPPING.
SHOPS AND OFFICES ACT,
(By Telegraph. Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Friday.
The proposed shopping hours for retailers during Christmas week is likely to cause considerable inconvenience is the opinion expressed by a>well versed retail business man.
He points out that under the provisions of the Shops and Offices' Act if shops were kept open on the Friday evening preceding Christmas they could not be kept open on Christmas Eve, which falls on a Monday, or, to put the position conversely, if shops had the late night on Christmas Eve they could not be open on the preceding Friday. It was further pointed out that if shops were closed on two whole days during Christmas week then they may remain open on the Friday or Saturday night of the same week, but if this is done they .could not be kept open on the following Monday night. Shopkeepers are only allowed the U3ual weekly late night if they are not open on Christmas Eve.
If the position stated above is correct, no doubt the Retailers' Association will give it consideration.
