CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
MAN FINED £5. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Friday. A case of cruelty to dumb animals was heard by Mr W. R. McKean, S.M., this morning, when William McKee was charged with cruelty to a cow. It was stated in evidence that McKee was droving a mob of cows and calves, when one of the calves had difficulty in crossing over the new tram rails and rough stones at Green Lane. It was alleged that the accused had thrown stones at it and that the animal fell to the ground stunned. The cow, seeing the calf’s plight, instinctively came back to its side. McKee had thrown from 20 to 30 stones and then picking up an extra large one hit the cow on the head. It also fell. It was stated for the defence that the cow was savage and had rushed a child. Accused was fined £5 and costs.
