SAWMILLERS PERTURBED.

AUSTRALIAN MARKET RESTRICTIONS. WELLINGTON, Friday. Advices from Greymouth state that last year about 17,000,000 super feet of timber from the West Coast were used in Canterbury, and it is anticipated that this year will see the figures reach 25,000,000. Canterbury is regard on the coast as the best provincial market in the Dominion. Those competent to know do not anticipate that the present boom in the sawmilling industry will last much beyond Christmas. The industry is in a flourishing condition because of the heavy demands from Canterbury consequent upon the opening of the tunnel; but it is anticipated that this market will soon be filled, and the millers, particularly in Westland, are perturbed at the restrictions this year on exports to Australia. These do not operate on white pin, but red pine is adversely affected. One company sent 360,000 square feet of rimu to Australia last year, but this year the total allowed has been cut down to 92 000 feet, despite the fact that it has orders to the end of the year for 250 000 feet. - It is contended that during a slump all restrictions on this industry, which employs the largest number of men in New Zealand, should be lifted.
