" Whattlers" are a rather numerous body in Australia. They are not a new religious sect, or are they a new political party. They are, in short, excessive drinkers—the type vho are not content with one drink, or two drinks, or, say, three, but who say, "What'll yer 'ave?" so often that they finish by getting drunk. They are "Whattlers." The Rev. R. S. B. Hammond, the leader of the prohibition party in New South Wales, made an exposure of them recently (reports a Sydney correspondent). Pie told his audience that in 1919 in New South Wales 63 persons were-convict-»d of drunkenness for every day the ;>ars were open. Last year the position -was worse. The number had rhen increased to 99 for "very day the hotels opened their doors In one ,-,ourt alone 273 people were convicted of diunkenness over a period of six drinking clays. Mr Hammond and bis cohorts have just mapped out a Statewide campaign in favour of prohibition, in preparedness for the coming referendum, the date of which, however, is to be >ft to the will of Parliament.
