PAYMENT AT FIRES.
AGREEMENT RE SALVAGE DUTY. t For some considerable time past matters in respect to salvage duty have been the subject of negotiation as between the insurance companies and the fire brigades. 'An agreement has been come to by the Underwriters' Council and the United Fire Brigades' Association, the provisions of which include: Immediately after a fire, when damage has been done to contents, the officer in charge of any fire brigade affiliated with the United Fire Brigades' Association shall, in the exercise of his discretion, place one man or more (not exceeding tlhree men) in charge, for the purpose of watching the salvage. The officer in charge shall advise the insurance ofinterested or the local representative of the Underwriters' Association as soon as possible that he has placed man on salvage duty. The man on salvage duty is to be immediately removed upon the officer in charge being so requested by the company or companies interested. The charge for salvage duty shall be 2s per hour during the day between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. and 3s per hour during the night between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., per man. In exceptional cases, the local committee may, on the recommendation of an authorised officer of the Fire Brigades' Association, increase this charge. The accounts for salvage duty shall be rendered within 7 days by the officer in charge (on regulation form as supplied by the Underwriters' Council —no other form is to .be recognised) to the secretary of the local Underwriters' Association concerned, who shall collect the respective proportions from the companies interested and transmit same 4o the officer in charge for payment to the person or persons entitled to receive same.
